When the weather subsided we headed through a complicated and time consuming ridge between Bears Playground and the saddle with Humbolt Peak. We were exhausted but the slopes of Humbolt's West ridge were inviting. Mostly, we wanted to salvage our aborted attempt on Kit Carson. The summit of Humbolt was obscured by residual clouds from the storm but the weather was now calm. Humbolt was not going to give up her summit easily as we would have liked. A nice false summit and then a small hike across a rocky field to reach the high point. Once on the summit we had great views of the Crestone Group and the Great Plains. It appeared that every mountain in the Sangre de Christos had its own cloud above it. We were on the summit by 5:25 PM and then back at our campsite by 7:35 PM. 15 hours and 25 minutes of climbing. Whew!
