Once off of the Needle's pitch we began to search for the trail to Crestone Peak. From previous research we knew that this trail was difficult to find and the route would be tricky. We spotted some cairns and a path down and across some gullies. The guide book says to stay on the South side of the ridge (back side of the Needle and Peaks from colony Lakes), we ended up on the North side of the ridge and found a nice rock crack to follow up to the ridge line and then over to the Eastern Summit of Crestone Peak. This was a chance mistake that we found a fun and safe route. Had we descended deeper into the valley we may have picked up the standard route.
