History

Since I was a child I've been fascinated with the Colorado mountains. Growing up we had one of those 3D relief maps of Colorado which I diligently memorized all the mountain names and elevations. Then when I was attending WYCO Drive Elementary I learned about Colorado history. Names like Kit Carson, John Evans, the Tabeguache Indians, Albert Ellingwood and Chief Shavano were but historical in nature and held no other relevance. WYCO was also where I learned that Colorado has 54 fourteeners!

The number 54 is often debated because there are different standards used to classify whether a peak is a mountain or a sub-peak of a mountain. The elevation difference and distance between the summits are the main point of contention. Although there are various standards of determining whether a peak is indeed a 14,000 foot mountain, I leave that argument up to the élitists, academics and peak baggers. Most people who argue about should just climb them.
